1857 A. Cayley in Philos. Trans. (Royal Soc.) 147 415 I propose (in analogy with the form Hessian) to call the two curves in question [previously denoted by P and Q] the Pippian and Quippian respectively.
1889 Philos. Trans. 1888 (Royal Soc.) A. 179 166 This..is identically equal to − 4P (lx + my + nz), where P is the Pippian, or Cayleyan, of the cubic u.
1921 Proc. London Math. Soc. 20 101 Cayley..obtained two contravariants of the cubic curve..which he called respectively the ‘Pippian’ and the ‘Quippian’... Subsequent writers have to a large extent discarded the term ‘Pippian’ and use the name ‘Cayleyan’ instead.
