Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Pirani.
Etymology: < the name of Marcello Stefano von Pirani (1880–1968), German physicist, who invented the gauge (described by him in Verhandl. der Deutschen Physikalischen Ges. (1906) 8 686).
Physics.
attributive. Designating a gauge which measures very low pressures by utilizing the cooling effect of the gas on a heated metal filament whose resistance is sensitive to temperature. Chiefly in Pirani gauge.
