单词 bearbind
释义

bearbindn.

Brit. /ˈbɛːbʌɪnd/, U.S. /ˈbɛrˌbaɪnd/
Forms:

α. Middle English berbynde, Middle English berebynde, Middle English berebinde, 1600s bearebind, 1700s– bearbind.

β. 1800s barbine, 1800s birbine, 1800s– bearbine Brit. /ˈbɛːbʌɪn/, /ˈbɪəbʌɪn/, U.S. /ˈbɛrˌbaɪn/.

Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: bere n.1, bind v.
Etymology: < bere n.1 (compare forms at that entry) + bind v., perhaps reflecting an unattested Old English *berebinde ; with the second element compare also bind n. (especially senses 2 and 3). So called on account of its habit of winding round and binding together stalks of barley. With the β. forms, which show loss of final -d , compare β. forms at woodbine n.; Surv. Eng. Dial. records pronunciations indicative of these forms from several west midland and south-eastern counties. Compare Old English berewinde (one isolated attestation; < bere n.1 + the base of wind v.1):OE Brussels Gloss. in T. Wright & R. P. Wülcker Anglo-Saxon & Old Eng. Vocab. (1884) I. 300 Umbilicum, berwinde. In this example probably mistakenly glossing Latin umbilicus , which may denote a different plant, perhaps navelwort. Although apparently not attested in Middle English and early modern English, bearwind is recorded by Surv. Eng. Dial. in use in Middlesex and London in the sense ‘bindweed’. Compare also the similarly-formed pair Old English wudubinde and wuduwinde (see woodbine n.).
English regional in later use.
Any of various European bindweeds or similar twining plants; esp. field bindweed, Convolvulus arvensis, and black bindweed, Fallopia convolvulus. Now chiefly in lists of alternative names for these plants.
