Etymology: < bear n.1 + cat n.1 With sense 2 compare later cat-bear n. at cat n.1 Compounds 3.In sense 1 after scientific Latin Arctictis, genus name (C. J. Temminck, 1824) < ancient Greek ἄρκτος bear (see Arctic adj.) + ἴκτις marten. In sense 2 after Chinese xióngmāo panda ( < xióng bear + māo cat; here specifically in xiǎoxióngmāo , literally ‘small bearcat, small panda’); compare cat-bear n. at cat n.1 Compounds 3. In sense 3 probably not alluding to either sense 1 or sense 2 (neither of which animals are particularly noted for such characteristics), but instead independently conceptualized as a blend of the strengths, ferocity, and agility of a bear and a cat.
