Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French pithiatisme.
Etymology: < French pithiatisme (J. Babinski 1901, in Revue neurologique 9 1079) < ancient Greek πειθώ persuasion ( < πείθειν to persuade: see pithanology n.) + ἰατός curable ( < ἰᾶσθαι to heal (see iatric adj.) + -τός , suffix forming verbal adjectives) + French -isme -ism suffix.
Psychology. Now chiefly historical.
A form of hysteria or hysterical symptom which is curable by persuasive suggestion; the treatment of hysteria by this means.
