Etymology: Probably either < Catalan pinyonada (although this is first attested slightly later: 1331; < pinyó (see pignon n.¹) + -ada ( < classical Latin -āta : see -ade suffix); compare also pinyonat (1331)) or < Old Occitan pinhonat (although this is also first attested slightly later: a1368; < pinho , pinhon (see pignon n.¹) + -at ( < classical Latin -ātum : see -ate suffix¹)). Compare post-classical Latin pinonada (1303, 1307 in British sources), pinionata (1329 in a British source), Spanish †piñonada (1438). Compare also Middle French pignolat pignolate n.While the earliest attestation in any language is apparently in Latin from a British source, the assumption has been made that both the product and its name were imported from southern Europe, as pine nuts were not grown in the British Isles.
