Of, relating to, or designating the latest epoch of the Tertiary period, between about 5.2 million and 1.64 million years ago, which followed the Miocene and (in modern classification) preceded the Pleistocene.The Pliocene epoch was marked by a gradual drop in global temperature and the appearance of the first hominids, including Australopithecus and Homo habilis. Pliocene rocks contain fossil evidence of numerous mammals.
