Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Pliopithecus.

Etymology: < scientific Latin Pliopithecus, genus name ( P. Gervais Zool. et paléontol. françaises (1848–52 ) I. 5) < plio- plio- comb. form + -pithecus (fossil) ape, specific use of classical Latin -pithēcus monkey (in cercopithēcus cercopithecus n.). Compare French Pliopithèque (P. Gervais 1848–52 in the work cited above).

Palaeontology.

Any of various extinct gibbon-like apes of the genus Pliopithecus, known from Miocene fossil remains found in several European countries, and dated to between 16 and 10 million years ago. Also: the genus itself.

2002 J. Agustí & M. Antón Mammoths, Sabertooths, & Hominids iv. 139 The limbs were relatively long and slender, suggesting that Pliopithecus was an arboreal primate that, like the gibbons, performed suspensory locomotion from tree to tree.
