Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Placentalia.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Placentalia ( C. L. Bonaparte Synopsis Vertebratorum Systematis(1837) 3), use as group name of neuter plural of placentalis , adjective (see placental adj.).
Zoology.
With singular agreement: a division of mammals comprising those in which the females develop a placenta, equivalent to the infraclass Eutheria. With plural agreement: placental mammals collectively; eutherians, as distinguished from marsupials and monotremes.
