Etymology: < German Plakode (C. von Kupffer 1894, in Sitzungsber. der Königl. Bayerischen Akad. der Wissensch. zu München : Math.-Phys. Classe 24 57) < ancient Greek πλακώδης laminated, flaky < πλακ- , πλάξ flat plate (see placo- comb. form) + -ώδης -ode comb. form1.In form plakode probably after the German form.
Embryology.
A localized thickening of the ectoderm in a vertebrate embryo which contributes to the formation of a sensory organ, ganglion, feather or scale, etc.
