Origin: A borrowing from Welsh. Etymon: Welsh Plaid Cymru.

Etymology: < Welsh Plaid Cymru, literally ‘party of Wales’ (1942 or earlier as a descriptive phrase, 1945 as the official name of the party) < plaid rank, faction, party (12th cent.; apparently originally in sense ‘wattle, board, movable partition’, although this is first attested slightly later (13th cent.); of uncertain origin; perhaps ultimately related to plait n. or its etymon Anglo-Norman pleit ) + Cymru Wales (see Cymric adj.). Compare earlier Plaid n.²The party's original name was Plaid Genedlaethol Cymru , literally ‘national party of Wales’ (compare quot. 1925). The shorter version became common in informal discourse, but the suggestion to make it the official name was initially rejected in 1943 before being passed in 1945.
