Etymology: < pleo- comb. form + ancient Greek -χροος -coloured ( < χρώς colour < the same base as χρῶμα colour: see chrome n.) + -ous suffix. Compare earlier allochroous adj., monochroous adj., parachroous adj., which however belong to different fields of science (medicine and entomology, respectively). Compare also earlier pleochroic adj.

Crystallography and Mineralogy. Obsolete. rare. Apparently only attested in dictionaries or glossaries.
