Etymology: < French pléonaste ( R. J. Haüy Traité de minéral. (1801) III. 17) < Hellenistic Greek πλεοναστός abundant < ancient Greek πλεονάζειν to be superfluous or redundant, to abound (see pleonasmus n.) + -τός, suffix forming verbal adjectives; so called from the multitude of faces of the crystal, each solid angle of the octahedron being often replaced by four faces.

Mineralogy.

A dark green, brown, or black ferroan variety of spinel. Also called ceylonite.
