Etymology: < plesio- comb. form + -morphic comb. form. In sense 2 after German plesiomorph ( W. Hennig Grundzüge einer Theorie der phylogenetischen Systematik (1950) ii. 142). Compare plesiomorphous adj., and (with sense 1) earlier plesiomorphism n.
