Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Plesiosaurus.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Plesiosaurus Plesiosaurus n.: see -saur comb. form. Compare French plésiosaure (1826), Italian plesiosauri, plural noun (1829).
Palaeontology.
Any of various extinct marine reptiles of the genus Plesiosaurus, the family Plesiosauridae, or the infraorder Plesiosauria, having a broad, flattened body, a usually small head (often on a long, flexible neck), a short tail, and four large, paddle-like limbs, known from fossil remains of the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods. Cf. elasmosaur (elasmosaurus n.), pliosaur n.
