Etymology: < Yiddish pletsl (plural pletslekh ) flat roll, cracker, probably (with suffix substitution) < German Plätzchen biscuit, cracker (16th cent.) < Platz , now denoting various baked goods regionally (2nd half of the 14th cent. in sense ‘flat biscuit, unleavened cake’), of uncertain origin + -chen -kin suffix. Compare Polish placek flat cake or pastry.

A flat roll, similar to a bagel, with a crisp or chewy texture.
