Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: platitude n., English -in- , -ous suffix.
Etymology: < platitude n. + -in- (see discussion at platitudinarian adj. and n.) + -ous suffix, probably after multitudinous adj. Compare slightly later platitudinary adj., platitudinarian adj. N.E.D.(1907) gives only the pronunciation (plætitiū·dinəs) /plætɪˈtjuːdɪnəs/.
Characterized by platitudes; full of platitudes; (of a person) that utters or writes platitudes.In quot. 1851 perhaps: flat and uninteresting.
