Etymology: Alteration of French Platon (masculine), the name of Plato (see Platonic adj. and n.), with final -ne as though a French feminine form: compare e.g. French baronne (feminine) beside baron (masculine) baron n., patronne (feminine) beside patron (masculine) patron n., etc.
rare. Now historical.
A woman who advocates platonic love.In later use with reference to quot. 1709.
