Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Partly formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: Latin accidentarius ; accident n., -ary suffix1.
Etymology: Partly < post-classical Latin accidentarius non-essential (a1540; < classical Latin accident- , accidēns , present participle of accidere (see accident n.) + -ārius -ary suffix1); and partly < accident n. + -ary suffix1. Compare earlier accidental adj.
Obsolete.
1. Having the nature of a logical accident; not affecting the essence, non-essential. Cf. accidental adj. 1, 2.
