Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Planigale.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Planigale, genus name (E. Le G. Troughton 1928, in Rec. Austral. Mus. 16 282) < plani- plani- comb. form + ancient Greek γαλῆ weasel (see galeopithecus n.), after scientific Latin Phascogale Phascogale n.
Any of several small, flat-skulled, mouse-like carnivorous marsupials of the genus Planigale (family Dasyuridae), native to Australia and New Guinea. Also (in form Planigale): the genus itself.
