单词 platy-
释义

platy-comb. form

Stress is usually determined by a subsequent element and vowels may be reduced accordingly.
Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymons: Greek πλατυ-, πλατύς.
Etymology: < ancient Greek πλατυ-, combining form (in e.g. πλατύκερκος flat-tailed: see platycercine adj. and n.) of πλατύς broad, flat (see plat adv.).First attested in the first half of the 19th cent. in a number of borrowings and adaptations of scientific Latin terminology in zoology (earliest in platypus n.; see also platyrrhine n.), palaeontology (see platycrinite n.), and botany (see platycodon n., platycephalous adj.), and also (especially in zoology) in loans and adaptations of French words ultimately of Greek origin, earliest in platydactyl n. and adj. (see also platysome n. , platynote adj. and n., etc.). Formations in English are found from the early 19th cent. (earliest in platybregmate adj.). Throughout that century they occur increasingly in other branches of the life and human sciences, as e.g. craniometry (from the early 19th cent.: see platybregmate adj., platyopic adj., platybrachycephalic adj. , etc.), ornithology (from the mid-19th cent.: see platyrhynchous adj. , platysternal adj. , etc.), anthropology (from the 2nd half of the 19th cent.: see platycephalic adj., platycnemic adj., etc.), etc. However, compounds occur in the late 19th cent. also in more general technical registers (see platymeter n. , platyscopic adj. ), and in the early 20th cent. in statistics (see platykurtic adj., platykurtosis n.). Combining with second elements ultimately of Greek origin. Compare scientific Latin platy-, French platy- (formations in which are found from at least the 2nd half of the 18th cent.).
Forming nouns and adjectives, particularly in biology and anatomy, with the sense ‘broad, flat’.
