Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: plani- comb. form, -graph comb. form.
Etymology: < plani- comb. form + -graph comb. form. In sense 2 after French planigraphe (1876).
1. Mathematics. In a system of joined pivoted rods: a curve traced out by a point in a notional plane attached to one of the rods when the system is manipulated, having the property that no manipulation can bring it into contact with any of the rods. Obsolete. rare.

Sylvester in Nature 15 July 215/1 The curve described by a point in one plane upon any other plane has been termed by me..a Graph, and..[I] have proposed to call the describing point the Gram. We may..understand by canonigrams describing points taken in the lines connecting the joints and their corresponding curves, canonigraphs; Grams lying outside these lines and their appurtenant Graphs may be termed Epipedograms and Epipedographs; or, if these names are found too long for use, Planigrams and Planigraphs.
2. An instrument for enlarging or reducing drawings; spec. one consisting of a ruler marked with two different scales placed end to end (one having markings more widely spaced than the other), which is pivoted about the point where the scales meet, so that measurements of a drawing can be taken using one scale, and consistently enlarged or reduced using the other. Now rare.
