Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Plansichter.

Etymology: < German Plansichter ( < plan flat, level (see plain adj.²) + Sichter (now obsolete or regional) < sichten sift v. + -er -er suffix¹), with alteration after sifter n. 2. Compare French plansichter (dated 1903 in Robert Dict. alphabétique et analogique(1986)).The machine was invented in the late 19th cent. by K. J. Haggenmacher (1835–1921), Swiss miller and mechanic. An Austrian patent (in German) for a more developed version survives from 1901.

A machine consisting of a mechanically agitated set of superimposed flat sieves of differing mesh, used in flour milling for separating and grading grain.
