Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly formed within English, by derivation. Partly a borrowing from French. Etymons: plant n.1, -age suffix; French plantage.
Etymology: In sense 1 < plant n.1 + -age suffix. In sense 2 probably < French plantage planting, cultivation of plants (1427 in Middle French), something that has been planted (a1525 in Middle French, now obsolete), plantation (especially in tropical colonies) (1694, now obsolete) < planter plant v. + -age -age suffix. With sense 2 compare ( < French) Dutch plantage cultivation of plants (1593 as †plantagie ), plantation (mid 17th cent. as †plantagie with reference to plantations in tropical colonies; earlier in more general sense ‘ground where shrubs, trees, etc. have been planted’ (1560 as †plantagie )), German Plantage plantation (mid 17th cent., first with reference to tropical plantations; perhaps < Dutch), and also earlier planting n., plantation n.
Now rare.
