Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin plantārium.
Etymology: < classical Latin plantārium nursery for plants (Pliny), in post-classical Latin also in figurative use (1586 (in Camden) or earlier: compare quot. 1794) < planta plant n.1 + -ārium -arium suffix. Compare Italian plantario nursery for plants (first half of the 14th cent.). Compare earlier plantary n.
A nursery for plants; (now) spec. a glass case in which plants that require a great deal of moisture may be grown. Also figurative.
