Etymology: < plant v. + -ed suffix1.It is unclear whether the Old English form geplantad is to be derived from a prefixed or an unprefixed verb, i.e. plantian or geplantian (see plant v.).
1. Set in the ground to grow, as a plant; fixed in, or as if in, the ground; (figurative) set up, established. Now also: placed surreptitiously or misleadingly; hidden, esp. so as to deceive the discoverer.
