Origin: Probably a borrowing from Norn.
Etymology: Probably < an unattested Norn compound (compare Old Icelandic planta plant n.1 and (with α. forms) Old Icelandic kró pen, fold (see croo n.), (with β. forms) cruive n. (probably borrowed from Older Scots into Norn), and (with γ. forms) Old Icelandic krubba crib (see crib n.; compare Shetland Scots crub , krubb , krobb small enclosure, especially one for growing cabbage plants)). Compare earlier plantiequoy n.The medial syllable should probably be interpreted as the reflex of an original inflectional ending (genitive plural) rather than as -y suffix6.

1806 P. Neill Tour 23 Upon the shores of Stronsa I first saw the small inclosures for raising cabbage-plants called planty-cruies. They are merely little square penns, or bughts, inclosed by a dry-stone wall.
