释义

plantulan.

Brit. /ˈplantjᵿlə/, /ˈplantʃᵿlə/, U.S. /ˈplæntʃələ/
Inflections: Plural plantulae.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin plantula.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin plantula small plant (5th cent.), young plant, seedling, slip, cutting (frequently from 13th cent. in British sources; also in figurative use) < classical Latin planta plant n.1 + -ula -ula suffix. With sense 1 compare post-classical Latin plantula seminalis (1693 or earlier). In sense 2 apparently a transferred use, on account of the supposed resemblance to a young plant (post-classical Latin plantula is not attested in this sense); unless perhaps independently < classical Latin planta plant n.2
