Origin: Probably a borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin planulatus.
Etymology: Probably < scientific Latin planulatus (1804 or earlier as specific epithet in zoological and paleontological use) < classical Latin plānus (see plain adj.2) + -ulus -ule suffix + -ātus -ate suffix2. Compare planular adj.
Chiefly Zoology and Palaeontology.
Of or having a flattened form.Now used esp. of ammonoids.
