Route to Pacific) (1856) III. iv. 144/1 On voit sur les plaquettes de grès des débris nombreux, ressemblant à des os brisés de poissons ou sauriens.W. P. Blake translates this passage as follows, rendering plaquettes by slabs : 1856 W. P. Blake tr. J. Marcou Geol. Rep. (U.S. War Dept.: Rep. Explor. Route to Pacific) III. iv. 144/2 We saw upon the slabs of sandstone numerous fossil fragments resembling broken bones of fishes or saurians. G. Bizzozero does not use French plaquette to denote blood platelets in his 1882 articles (compare quot. 1883 at sense 3, and see platelet n.); instead, he uses petite plaque and plaque (see plaque n.). N.E.D.(1907) gives the non-naturalized pronunciation (plake·t) /plaˈkɛt/.

1883 Smithsonian Rep. 735 G. Hayem insists that the elements of the blood, to which he gave the name of hematoblasts, are identical with the ‘plaquettes’, or corpuscles, described by Bizzozero.
