(1832) 62) or its etymon (ii) French Plectognathes ( Cuvier Règne animal (1817) II. 144) < ancient Greek πλεκτός plaited, twisted ( < πλέκειν to plait, twist (see plecolepidous adj.) + -τός , suffix forming verbal adjectives) + γνάθος jaw (see -gnath comb. form).With use as adjective compare French plectognathe (1860 or earlier), and earlier plectognathian adj. and n., plectognathic adj., plectognathous adj.

A fish of the order Tetraodontiformes (or Plectognathi), which comprises tropical marine teleosts having beaklike mouths in which the upper jaw is firmly attached to the cranium and skin that is either thick and leathery or consists of spines or plates.The order includes puffer fishes and filefishes.
