Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French plexichronomètre.
Etymology: < French plexichronomètre (probably c1784; compare quot. 1786) < Hellenistic Greek πλῆξις stroke, percussion (see pleximeter n.), perhaps taken in sense ‘beat’ + French chronomètre chronometer, metronome (see chronometer n.).
Obsolete. rare.
An instrument for timing the beats in music; a metronome.
