Origin: From proper names, combined with English elements. Etymons: proper name Belorussija , -an suffix; proper name Belarus , -ian suffix.
Etymology: In α. forms < Russian Belorussija, the Russian form of the name of a country in eastern Europe (19th cent.; see below) + -an suffix. In β. forms < Belarus, the name of the country (see below) + -ian suffix. For parallels of the two form types with -russian as the ending of the word see Belorussian n. and adj. With use as adjective (sense A.) compare Belarusian belaruski , Russian belorusskij , adjectives. With sense B. 1 compare Belarusian belarus , Russian belorus . With sense B. 2 compare Belarusian belaruskaja , Russian belorusskij , nouns. Compare also White Russian adj. 1, White Russian n. 1.The name Belarus is < Belarusian Belarus′ (19th cent.) < bely white + -o- -o- connective + Rus′ , the name of areas inhabited by the East Slavs (see Russ adj.); see White Russian n. Russian Belorussija is perhaps < belorus inhabitant of that country (see White Russian n.) + -ija -ia suffix1. In English usage, Belarus replaced Byelorussia (attested in English from 1854 or earlier) as the name of the country following the dissolution of the Soviet Union and creation of an independent Republic of Belarus (1991).
