Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin podismus.
Etymology: < classical Latin podismus length measured in feet, area in square feet, area of ground, in post-classical Latin space of ground assigned to a legionary in battle (4th cent. in Vegetius, the source translated in quot. a1460 at sense 1) < Hellenistic Greek ποδισμός rhythm of the pulse, kind of dance, in medieval Greek also scansion < ancient Greek ποδίζειν to bind the feet, in medieval Greek also to measure by feet, scan ( < ποδ- , πούς foot (see -pod comb. form) + -ίζειν -ize suffix) + -ισμός -ism suffix. N.E.D. (1907) gives the pronunciation as (pǫ·diz'm) /ˈpɒdɪz(ə)m/.
