Forms: Middle English–1800s beldame, 1600s belldame, Middle English– beldam.
Etymology: Not a direct adoption of the French belle dame ‘fair lady,’ but formed upon dam , earlier dame , in its English sense of ‘mother,’ with bel- employed to express relationship, as in belsire , belfader : see bel. For the transference to a more remote ancestor see also belsire n.; for the extension to old woman, etc., compare gaffer, gammer, goody, grandame, granny.
