Etymology: < plough n.1 + gang n. Compare Old Icelandic plóg-gangr plough furrow. Compare earlier oxgang n. and ploughland n., and slightly later ploughgate n.Compare also Old English plōgagang , in the same sense (one attestation in a late copy of a grant of land at Patrington, Yorkshire, made in 1033; apparently < plōga- (in plōgaland ploughland n.) + gang n., after oxgang n.; see further discussion at ploughland n.):a1400 ( Bounds (Sawyer 968) in W. Farrer Early Yorks. Charters (1914) I. 25 And on Hals[a]ham þriddan healfes plogesland and healf an oxangang; and on þorpe ii plogagang landes and i oxangang and [h]ealfes plogesland on Sumeres mersc[e].

A measure of arable land based on the area able to be tilled by one plough with a team of horses or oxen in the year, varying in extent according to the type of plough used, the nature of the ground, etc. Cf. ploughgate n., ploughland n. 1.
