Origin: A borrowing from Southern Nilotic. Etymon: Southern Nilotic Pokot.
Etymology: < Southern Nilotic Pokot, self-designation.Sometimes explained as meaning ‘to whom the house belongs’ but this is folk etymology. The plural Pokots is regarded as incorrect by specialists. The former name Suk n. and adj. is considered to be derogatory.

1951 Africa 21 202 (note) The Pokot word for it is kiripko but it has been abandoned in favour of the Karamojong equivalent , akipiret.
