Origin: A borrowing from Sinhala. Etymon: Sinhala pol sambal.
Etymology: < Sinhala pol sambal < pol coconut + sambal sambal curry (of uncertain origin; perhaps < Pali sambala provisions). Compare sambal n.
In Sri Lankan cookery: an uncooked condiment consisting of shredded coconut, onion, chillies, and lime juice. Cf. sambal n.
