单词 polan
释义

Polann.

Brit. /ˈpəʊlən/, /pə(ʊ)ˈlan/, U.S. /ˈpoʊlən/, /poʊˈlɑn/
Origin: Probably a borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Polanus.
Etymology: Probably < post-classical Latin Polanus (end of the 10th cent. in plural Polani ) < Old Polish Polanin (plural Polanie ), lit. ‘field-dweller’ (13th cent. as a personal name; in modern Polishreplaced by Polak : see Polack n. and adj.) < pole field (see polje n.). Compare Middle French poulin a Pole (second half of the 14th cent.), poulain (mid-15th cent. or earlier as noun in sense ‘the Polish language’ and as adjective with reference to the language), and perhaps also Middle High German Pōlān, pœlān a Pole (probably < post-classical Latin; homonymous with Pōlān, Pœlān, the name of the country).Compare Pullane, Polayne, Polen in English as a name for Poland:a1400 in T.
