Etymology: < polar adj. + star n.1, after post-classical Latin stella polaris (1492 in Alphonsine Tables). Compare French étoile polaire (c1555 or earlier in Middle French as estoile polaire ), Spanish estrella polar (1507 or earlier). Compare earlier Pole Star n.
The Pole Star; (also) an analogous fifth-magnitude star in the southern hemisphere, σ Octantis, close to the south celestial pole. Also figurative: something that serves for guidance; = Pole Star n. 2.
