Etymology: < polio n. + virus n.The one-word form became usual following the proposal of Poliovirus as a genus name in 1954:1954 Nature 3 Apr. 621/1 Proposed ‘non-Linnæan’ binomials for some animal viruses... Poliovirus hominis (human poliomyelitis). Poliovirus muris (mouse encephalomyelitis, TO type).
Medicine.
A virus that causes poliomyelitis; spec. a human virus belonging to the genus Enterovirus (family Picornaviridae) that causes most cases of poliomyelitis, and is separable into three serotypes.
