Etymology: < Anglo-Norman populeon, populion (c1240 or earlier; compare Old French, Middle French, French †populeon (second half of the 13th cent. in Old French in an apparently isolated attestation; subsequently from the end of the 15th cent.), French populéum (1575 in Middle French as populeum )) and its etymon post-classical Latin popilion, populeon (1200, a1250 respectively in British sources), alteration (after Greek neuter nouns in -ον ) of an unattested post-classical Latin form *populeum , use as noun of neuter of classical Latin pōpuleus (see populeal adj.). Compare Old Occitan popilion (14th cent.), Catalan populeó (c1300 as †populeon), Spanish populeón (15th cent.; earlier as †populion (late 14th–early 15th cent. or earlier)).The origin of the β forms, which are not paralleled in Romance languages, is unclear.
