单词 poecilo-
释义

poecilo-comb. form

Stress is usually determined by a subsequent element and vowels may be reduced accordingly.
Forms: before a vowel poecil-.
Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Partly a borrowing from Greek. Etymons: Latin poecilo-; Greek ποικιλο-.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin poecilo-, combining form (in e.g. poecilomorphus , a1564 in Calvin) and its etymon ancient Greek ποικιλο- (see poikilo- comb. form). Compare French pœcilo- . Compare poikilo- comb. form.In post-classical Latin, the combining form is used occasionally from the 16th cent. onwards. In French, the combining form is first attested in an isolated attestation in the 17th cent. (pœcilographie (?1635)). Otherwise, formations are known in French and English from the 19th cent. onwards. There is apparently no clear semantic distinction between formations in poecilo- and formations in the commoner poikilo- (see poikilo- comb. form).
