Etymology: < scientific Latin Poephaga (R. Owen 1839, in Proc. Zool. Soc. 7 16; < ancient Greek ποηϕάγος eating grass or herbs (Aristotle) < πόα grass (see poa n.) + -ϕάγος : see -phagous comb. form) + -ous suffix. N.E.D. (1907) gives the pronunciation as (poˌe·făgəs) /pəʊˈɛfəɡəs/.

Zoology. Obsolete. rare.

Feeding on grass or herbage; spec. belonging to the former division Poephaga of herbivorous marsupials.
