Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Greek. Partly a borrowing from German. Etymons: Greek πόλος; German Polos.
Etymology: < ancient Greek πόλος axis, sphere, vault of heaven (see pole n.2), in Hellenistic Greek also a headdress worn by goddesses (Pausanias); originally via German Polos (1835 in the passage translated in quot. 1847).In plural form poloi after the Greek plural form.
