Origin: A borrowing from Cornish. Etymon: Cornish pol-rôs.
Etymology: < Cornish pol-rôs < pol pond, pit (see pool n.1) + rôs , rôz wheel < classical Latin rota (see rota n.).
English regional (Cornwall). Now rare.
The pit under a waterwheel at a mine.
