Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; perhaps modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: poltroon n., -ize suffix.
Etymology: < poltroon n. + -ize suffix, perhaps after French †poltroniser to be cowardly (1611 in Cotgrave in an apparently isolated attestation: see quot. 1611; compare also Middle French apoltronniser to make cowardly (16th cent. in an apparently isolated attestation), Middle French, French †poltroniser to be lazy (mid 16th cent.)). Compare post-classical Latin poltronizare (1317, commenting on use of the word in Italian), Italian poltroneggiare (14th cent.), both in sense ‘to be lazy, to act in a lazy manner’.
Obsolete. rare.
