Etymology: < post-classical Latin polyandrium place of burial for a number of people (4th cent.) and its etymon Hellenistic Greek πολυάνδριον, use as noun of neuter singular of Hellenistic Greek or Byzantine Greek πολυάνδριος (adjective) of or relating to many men < ancient Greek πολυ- poly- comb. form + ἀνδρ- , ἀνήρ man, male (see andro- comb. form) + -ιος , suffix forming adjectives. Compare slightly later polyandrum n. and the French forms cited at that entry.
Chiefly Ancient Greek History.
A place of burial for a number of people, a common grave.Used esp. of ancient Greek burial sites for soldiers killed in battle.
