Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin porcatus.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin porcatus (1766 or earlier in paleontological, 1772 or earlier in botanical and entomological use) < classical Latin porca ridge ( < the same Indo-European base as furrow n.) + -ātus -ate suffix2. Compare earlier porcated adj. N.E.D. (1907) gives the pronunciation as (pǭ·ɹkĕt) /ˈpɔːkət/.
Zoology and Botany. rare.
Having a series of parallel ridges.
