Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; modelled on a Bulgarian lexical item. Etymons: plum n., pox n.
Etymology: < plum n. + pox n., after Bulgarian šarka na slivite (D. Atanasoff 1932, in Godišnik na Sofijskija Universitet Agronomski Fakultet 11 49).
Plant Pathology.
An aphid-borne virus disease affecting wild and cultivated plants of the genus Prunus, which typically causes pale blotches or rings on the leaves and discoloration of the fruit, sometimes accompanied by necrosis. Also called sharka.
